Drop off your plastic bags and canning jars at the orchard and we'll re-use them!

We're always looking for wagons for people to use when they go to our pumpkin patch - feel free to drop off your old or un-used wagons at the orchard!

We're also happy to take any picnic tables you're getting rid of - even if it's just the 'bones' of the table.

Apple-Azing Race: "Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck Challenge

Today I’m going to share with you a third challenge from the Apple-Azing Race.  I’m posting these challenges in the order teams had to complete them although they may have begun their day at a different challenge.  In order to avoid waiting I scattered the 17 teams to start at one of the eight challenges.

All photo’s on this blog post were taken by Michelle Cross Photography.  Michelle did a fantastic job shooting each event so I’ll be able ‘illustrate’ each challenge for you!  If you want to order any photo’s from the race follow these instructions:

  1. go to www.michellecrossphotography.blogspot.com
  2. Click ‘clients’
  3. Click ‘Apple-Azing Race Gallery’

Each challenge was named after a book to follow along with the fact that we were raising money for the Poynette Area Public Library. I’m going to blog about each challenge – the clue to find the challenge, the challenge itself and exactly what each team had to do at each challenge.

Once the two members of each team completed “The Complete Idiots Guide to Working Out With a Partner” Challenge they were given their next clue:

"Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck Challenge Clue:

Lookout for the wrath of toppling trees and press on up the hill for this juicy challenge. Decide on 2 team members that will participate in this challenge.

Participants were emailed the link to the Orchard Map and told to read over the blog posts I had done in September.  Hopefully they read the post ‘Last Nights Storm’ and they would know right away to head up to the lookout deck.

Apple-azing Race Photo's at Lapack's OrchardThere they found Dave Lapacek – Farmer Frank’s brother and the father of Shaun Lapacek who has started a winery in Poynette – Rock N Wool Winery.     Rock N Wool Winery is shooting for a July 1st, 2013 opening date so be sure to keep an eye them so you don’t miss it!  Once the teams found Dave they received their next Challenge:Apple-azing Race Photo's at Lapack's Orchard

Two teammates can participate in this challenge. You must assemble the old grape press from Rock N Wool Winery – opening in July 2013 on Drake Road, Poynette, WI. Apple-azing Race Photo's at Lapack's Orchard

At 10 minutes, Dave or Shaun Lapacek will give you a hint. Along with this hint comes a 20 second penalty to your time. For each hint after this point you will receive another 20 second penalty. Apple-azing Race Photo's at Lapack's OrchardIf at 15 minutes you have still not assembled the press you will be given a score of 20 minutes. At the completion of the task or at the 15 minute time limit you will receive your next clue.

Apple-azing Race Photo's at Lapack's Orchard We had to limit the time on this challenge because we only had one wine press to assemble.

With 17 teams if they all took 15 minutes to complete the challenge it would be a total of 4.25 hours minimum for the teams to get through.  And that’s not including any extra time for taking apart the press, etc before the next team.  Most took less than the 15 minutes so overall it worked pretty well.   Apple-azing Race Photo's at Lapack's OrchardAs usual – once teams were complete – they blew their whistle to stop the clock.   Apple-azing Race Photo's at Lapack's Orchard

Above is ‘Team Galloping Gimps’ taking a break on the trucks’ tailgate.

The only downfall for this challenge was the fact that only one team could complete it at a time.  This meant eventually a line did form. So teams couldn’t see what was happening, we had them wait behind the truck Dave had up there.  We had a corn hole game set up so teams could play for fun, or you could even have a snack, etc.

And now I’ll share with you the top ten teams to complete this challenge (this is with any penalties figured into their score).  Apple-azing Race Photo's at Lapack's Orchard
