Operation Fruit & Vegetables–Kids in the Garden 2013
- Help plant a special kid’s garden and care for it every week.
- Special hands on learning activities in all the other gardens at Lapacek’s including apples, pears, peaches, blueberries, raspberries, squash, pumpkins, gourds, cabbage, sunflowers, herbs, tomatoes and peppers. We’ll even keep an eye on the ornamentals.
- Learn about the life cycle of plants, how to build great soil, pollination and lots, lots more.
- Explore whether critters are friends or foes.
- Sample fruits and veggies right after picking (sometimes raw and sometimes cooked) with the kids involved in every step.
- On Wednesday, July 17th Chef Matt from Monty's Blue Plate Diner will be visiting and COOKING WITH THE KIDS! This will be an extra special day this summer!
- Additional ‘field trips’ will be available this year. These will most likely happen at times not during the normal programming and may cost additional fees depending one where we’re going. I’ll keep you posted as I schedule these.
We will be holding informational sessions during Apple Blossom Days – the first two weekends in May if you want to find out more about this program before you sign up. Stop by anytime between 10-4 and we’d be happy to answer any questions you may have about the program.
Wednesday afternoons, June 12, 19, 26, July 10, 17, 24, 31 and August 7 from 2:00-3:30. Cost is $30 per child for the entire season ($25 for any addition child in the family – example; Two children in a family would cost $55 for the season, 3 children in a family $80 for the season). Come as often as you can. An interested adult is required to accompany the child(ren) at no charge.
Think this sounds like fun? Don’t worry – you can come any week for just $5/child. If you can possibly email me ahead of time (lapaceksorchard {at} gmail {dot} com) so I can make sure to have enough for everyone that would be great. BUT if it's a last minute decision that you make please still come! All are welcome!
If you already know that you and your child (or children) are definitely in please send Kim an email at (lapaceksorchard {at} gmail {dot} com) to reserve your space. Don’t hesitate to ask questions!
Not sure if you’re interested? Just click on the links below to see all the fun we had during the last 2012 season!
Road Trip
Yesterday morning I pried myself out of bed at the early hour of 3:45am. Jared, who’s used to getting up this early for work, didn’t have too much of an issue. We were on the road by 4:00am. (My parents came and stayed with the girls and got Cedi to school). We were heading to Michigan and back to pick up the apple trees we are planting in the orchard this year. We made great time and were at Hilltop Fruit Trees by 10:00 (Michigan time…so 9:00 our time). We had 275 trees to load onto the truck and take home. Here they are all loaded. The key to driving with them is to keep there roots covered so the wind didn’t completely dry them out. Jared strapped and strapped and strapped them down.
We were back on the road and home before 3:00pm. A success. Here’s a picture of a gnarly looking tree at the Hilltop orchard. Jared and I are thinking these are some that the company uses for grafting to make other trees. Either that or they have a completely different method of pruning than we do. Any way you look at it – the orchard full of theses shaped trees is super creepy but super cool looking.
I had to snap this picture before we left too. They had HUGE stacks of pallets at their place and I loved these brightly painted ones.
We think we have at least one place in the orchard that is actually dry enough for us to plant in so we’ll get about 70 in later today – fingers crossed…

*We still aren’t sure on the exact days of the apple blossoms this year. We’re thinking they should be there at least one of the two weekends.
I’ll be updating this post as I ironed out more of the details and before the big days I’ll be sure to post an itinerary for each of the days so you are sure not to miss anything!
New Addition
Wow – I’ve been terrible at keeping you all posted on the orchard going-on’s this winter. So – here’s some pictures I snapped at the end of February. I’ll get some more recent ones posted as soon as I take them (sorry..I thought I had already…)
Here’s the new view of the sheds as you pull into the orchard. And a closer view of the addition we added. The shed roof goes from the one shed to the other but part of it is just a lean. We put in translucent roof pieces so the sunlight will still go through…it’s going to look ‘magical’. Here’s the view of the addition if you are standing back by the goat pen.The walls and ceiling are all covered in wood boards planed from trees off Frank’s land. The loft. We’re not 100% sure what we’re going to be doing with the loft area on the addition but part of it is going to be a place our girls can hang out while we’re working in the shop. They had fun painting the boards for the railing of their area.
And a view of walking in the door. It’s definitely going to be different!
