Apple Blossom Days
Yes, no matter what the weather is like the orchard will be open at its NEW LOCATION (N1959 Kroncke Road, Poynette, WI) from 9-4 both Saturday and Sunday for Apple Blossom Days. BUT, I do have to admit that with the beautiful weather we had earlier this spring the trees bloomed really early and unfortunately with this wind there aren’t many left on the trees. There is still plenty of fun to be had though – and with this new development with the blossoms the ‘Photo Scavenger Hunt’ I have put together for you will be even more of a challenge!
Alright – so there aren’t many blossoms, but there is a fun scavenger hunt – why else should you take some time to stop out at the orchard?
Well…as you can see in the first picture I posted our emus have been moved over – that’s right! Mac ‘n’ Tosh have joined the goats at our orchard! We also have some of their beautiful blown out eggs for sale – how many moms are going to be able to go to work on Monday and say, “My kid got me an emu egg for Mother’s Day!!”
If you don’t think Mom would be excited by an emu egg we have other great Mother’s Day gifts to choose from – like one of Diane’s dyed and painted bird house gourds, a beautiful quilt, a piece of jewerly, a hanging plant, an assortment of canned goods from the orchard, Hedmark’s Maple Syrup, Farm Fresh Honey or MORE!
Also, our goats, Itsy, Zestar!, and Tree just love visitors!
When the rain stops on Saturday afternoon bring the kids out to try out our new duck races and to play on our playground equipment! Or if they don’t mind the rain bring them in the morning!
I also have a decent selection of Bubble wands (Dragonfly, Fish, Hand, Heart, Seahorse, and Whale) that kids can have hours of fun with! I’m sure Cedi and Capri will be more than happy to show you how they work.
Hope to see you at the orchard this weekend!
Mac 'n' Tosh update
Mac 'n' Tosh are in the red barn, where they typically spend the winter. We expect the hatch date to be right around the first of June, then we'll need to figure out how to get the whole family out to their summer pen behind the store where you usually visit them in the fall. And, we'll need to secure that pen so the babies can't go under the fence. I don't think they'll be ready to meet up with Barney and Jackson for a couple weeks at least.
Note that they have apple cores in their hands. Mac 'n' Tosh love apples and will swallow a core whole. You're sure they'll choke on it as it goes down. Cedi was eating an apple while standing near their pen with me one day and Tosh reached through the fence and stole it out of her hand. It didn't hurt her, but it did scare her. That's why we don't offer you the chance to feed apples to the emus like we do with the cows.
Mac 'n' Tosh
Since we knew almost nothing about emus, we went in search of information. Most importantly, they make a regular emu feed… and a local feed supplier stocks it. So at least they wouldn’t starve to death while we were still learning. We soon also figured out that we had a male and a female, and our daughter, Karma, came up with the perfect names. Given that they’re part of an apple orchard, it seemed only fitting that they be named after one of our most popular apple varieties, the Macintosh. So, Mac is the male (he makes a grunting sound) and Tosh is the female (she makes a booming sound, similar to a bass drum). Together they make the friendly pair of Mac ‘N Tosh.
DID YOU KNOW….
Emus can run up to 40 miles per hour!
One emu egg is equivalent to a dozen chicken eggs!
When sitting on the nest, it’s the male that does the sitting. The female emu is larger than the male.
