Apple-Azing Race: "Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum Challenge

We’re going to move right along to the next challenge of our big Apple-Azing Race.

Each challenge was named after a book to follow along with the fact that we were raising money for the Poynette Area Public Library. I’m going to blog about each challenge – the clue to find the challenge, the challenge itself and exactly what each team had to do at each challenge.

Once teams completed the “Grapes of Wrath” Challenge they received this clue:

Watch out for tornadoes on your way down from the lookout deck and help a poor man get a new brain. Decide on 2 team members that will participate in this challenge.

If teams followed the orchard walk path down from the lookout deck they would have seen in the big open area where our Underground building used to be a wagon was set up with their next challenge. I definitely could have figured out something a little more to help with this but eventually all the teams found their way!

Once there, teams received the next challenge: 

"Wizard of Oz" by L. Frank Baum Challenge

Two teammates must replicate the scarecrow that Diane has made. Once our volunteer determines that you’ve done it correctly you will get your next clue.

These scarecrows will be for sale once you are finished them with a portion of the proceeds going to the Poynette Area Public Library. Make sure they look nice!

The green wagon we have that now holds gourds, pumpkins and squash was full of all the supplies teams would need to make their scarecrow – shirts, jeans, straw, hats, heads, rope, etc.  The tools needed – paint brushes (for painting on the face), scissors, etc – where all tied to the wagon so you had to move around the wagon to complete parts.     Other ‘tricks’ where tying the twine for the pants through the pants and then up over the shoulders of the scarecrow so the pants wouldn’t fall down…

And tying the hat onto the ‘head’ so it wouldn’t blow off in the wind.  I head from many teams that this was one of their favorite challenges – I LOVE the end results too!

The scarecrows the teams made are all for sale at the orchard (Well except Cedi’s and Capri’s – we bought those…Capri’s is the one in the upper right of this picture…”Uhhh…I think I made the nose a little big…” !~Capri).  Part of the proceeds from the Scarecrow sales will also go to the Poynette Area Public Library.  We still have lots of scarecrows left so be sure to stop by the orchard to get yours!
